This time of year many of us are moving home.   Once you have sold your home  and have a moving in date, this simple  checklist should help make the transition from one home to another as smooth as possible.  We hope that you find it useful.

  1. Book your removal company or van. The end of the month can be a particularly busy time so make sure you book your removal well in advance.
  2. Arrange time off work.
  3. Arrange appropriate childcare / pet care. Your Solicitor will aim to settle your sale and purchase as early as possible on your moving day, but even with the best will in the world it can be difficult to predict when the keys to your new home will be available – best to make sure you have arrangements in place for children and pets to be looked after leaving you free all day to take care of your move.
  4. Arrange insurance – our Financial Services Department will be happy to assist with all your insurance needs, for example buildings, contents, life cover and income protection. Click here for  more information.
  5. Notify your change of address to the bank, doctor, dentist, vet, your employer, council tax, insurance providers, children’s school(s)/college (s)university,  phone/internet/mobile phone provider and anyone else you can think of and also set up a re-direction of your mail.
  6. Arrange final meter readings at your old home.
  7. Arrange phone/internet connection at your new home from the date of entry.
  8. Arrange for a plumber to check over the central heating system at your new property – it is likely that your purchase contract will provide a warranty that the heating system will be in working order for a short while after the date of entry. By the same token, if the heating system in your old property is due a service, arrange to have that done before you move, for peace of mind.
  9. On moving day make sure you leave your home in a clean and tidy condition and remove any contents which are not included in the sale.
  10. Pack a survival kit (kettle, tea and coffee, toilet roll, light bulbs, cleaning items etc) and make sure this is easily accessible when you arrive at your new home.
