Today (8th January 2024) is commonly recognised as ‘Divorce Day’ in the UK.  The first Monday back at work following the festive break tends to see a spike in family law enquiries and people asking for advice regarding separation and divorce

Is there a rush to get divorced on the first working Monday in the New Year?

Christmas for some may not be the ‘most wonderful time of the year’.  Relationships which are already under pressure may be more likely to breakdown, as a result of the pressure that Christmas can bring when families spend extended periods of time together as increasingly businesses close for the whole festive period, and schools often don’t return until a few days after the New Year has officially started. The current cost of living crisis may also exacerbate family tensions due to the expense of Christmas. All these factors are likely to lead to an increase in enquiries on this first working Monday.

If cracks are appearing in your relationship

Post-Christmas, or at any other time of year, if your relationship is under strain there are many other options to consider before the finality of divorce or dissolution.  Ending a relationship can be extremely costly both emotionally and economically, with the impact extending from those immediately involved to the wider family.  Consideration of alternative methods of dispute resolution  such as collaboration and  mediation are worthwhile.  These methods may result in a more amicable resolution which can often be quicker and more cost effective than, for example, going to court.
